Hello everyone!

We hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and are ready for the Spring Term!

Phonics - We are following the Supersonic Phonic Friends programme for phonics, which the children were introduced to last year. This combines an active and fun way. Click here for a sneak peek at how a Supersonic Phonics lesson works. We will embark on Phase 5 phonemes and graphemes this term, including alternative spellings for familiar sounds. This rule is called 'Choose to use' where the two graphemes sound the same but look different. For example 'oa' (as in boat) and 'oe' (as in toe). For phonics practice at home, you can find free games and resources on the Phonics Play website, providing exciting ways to recognise real and fake words, practice tricky words and segment and blend sounds.

Children should continue to read and be read to daily, a variety of texts with different genres e.g. non-fiction information books, fairy stories and recipe books to build upon vocabulary and understanding of each genre's style. Reading books will be changed on Tuesdays and library books changed on Wednesdays.

Literacy - In class, we are focusing on a story called "Lost and Found" by Oliver Jeffers. The story follows a boy and a penguin, the boy takes the penguin on an adventure back to the South Pole - only to realise he was never lost but lonely. Using the story as a focus, we will be working on writing a letter to inform people what happened and why the boy should be able to keep the penguin. We will use skills from phonics lessons and elements of drama to guide us with our writing.

Maths - This term, we will be learning about place value to 20, explaing our knowledge of:1 more and 1 less, comparing, greater than, less than and equal to as well as addition and subtraction within 20.  Numberblocks episodes on BBC iPlayer are a great way for your children to become familiar with mathematical concepts through songs.

PE Days - Monday and Wednesday afternoons. This term, we will be focussing on our fundamental movement skills and gymnastics. Please ensure they have a full PE kit in school at all times, as well as a jumper or long bottoms. Due to the weather, we might change PE days, and one of our units is outdoor, so we will be going outside if cold.

Please use tapestry to celebrate any work or exciting activities your child does at home - we love seeing what they get up to outside the classroom!
